Blazingstars (Liatris spp.) of Northwest indiana

Liatris or blazingstars are members of the Aster family (Asteraceae).  Different species of blazingstars are abundant in the United States with four native to the Indiana Dunes.  Not only are they attractive wildflowers for human eyes with their brilliant colors and shape, but also for pollinators such as butterflies, bees, moths, and hummingbirds.  Blazingstars are perfect for border plantings or naturalized prairie areas.  They are also deer resistant!  If all that isn't enough, they bloom from top down.
